The Department of Applied Foreign Languages established the Joy English Service Learning Team and served the children in culturally-disadvantaged aboriginal areas, which was highly praised by the faculty at Gueishan Elementary School in Gueishan Village, and Jeso Elementary School in Fushing Village, Taoyuan County. Some low achieving students' motivation in English learning were enhanced through one-on-on instruction provided by AFL student teachers.
The Cooperative Project of English Teaching between the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at Lunghwa University and Gueishan Elementary School First- and Second-year students from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages (AFL) provided guidance on English learning at Gueishan Elementary School after their school hours. These student teachers instruct students from 3rd to 6th grades in pronunciation and assist in reviewing their English assignments. The sophomore student teachers taught phonics and involved students in various learning activities to increase their interest in learning English. Most importantly, they provided instruction for the low-achieving students and enhanced their English learning. Each time before the program started, AFL students designed course content and materials and practiced teaching, which were supervised by the instructor Wendy Chang.
